Every now and then I choose poetry over prose. Two odes:

The Shop-Vac

Motorized cylinder on wheels
hose and nozzle
extend like an elephant’s trunk
suck up remodeling debris

Like a tornado
safe inside a snow globe
it keeps me from drowning in dust

Boulder Creek

This Santa Cruz Mountains town
attracts all kinds
including me once

Twenty-five years ago
I was planted in this place
watered in a Redwood rainforest
where I grew sturdy and eternal
